A Guide to the Best Jazz Clubs in the District

By Nicole Brewer

What better way to explore a city than through music? Jazz has a rich cultural history throughout the United States, so of course it serves as a great storyteller of our nation’s capital: Washington, District of Columbia. While trotting through the District, why not check out this list of the best jazz clubs to visit in the region? While you’re at it, make sure to review the Excursiopedia site to research possible options for city breaks, tours and other activities in the region.

No matter if you are traveling to the District in the summer or winter, these jazz clubs will be sure to keep you feeling cool or heat you up while you fancy visiting the city.  Check out the guide below.

Bohemian Caverns:  Down-Home Music

This is the place to go for classic jazz music.  It is located near the Lounge of Three, is right up the road from the Lincoln Theatre, and is the perfect place to chill out to some good music after taking in a movie.  It’s easy to reach as it’s right off the U Street/African-American Civil War Memorial stop on the Green Line. The setting of Bohemian Caverns will make you feel like you stepped right out of the roaring ’20s. It also is designed in what appears to be rock formations, making you feel like you are underground in a grotto. This is a cool place to listen to some down-home music.

If you want to stay overnight in the area, make sure to check out the Hyatt Regency Washington, DC, hotel.

Twins Jazz: An Intimate Music Affair

If you are looking for a laid-back and relaxing place to take in some jazz music, then the Twins Jazz club is the right place for you.  Also located off the U street exit on the Green Line Metro, this jazz club is renowned for being the place that serious musicians like to get down and funky on the instrumentals. It has been recognized as one of the best jazz clubs in the District area, so you certainly won’t be disappointed by a visit here. If you get hungry while partaking in the festivities, a stop at the nearby Black & Orange burger joint is highly recommended.

After a fun-filled night of listening to the best in town, why not spend the evening at the Dupont Circle Hotel in the area?

Blues Alley: A Georgetown Staple

Last but certainly not least is Blues Alley, home to some of the jazz legends that have often played in the District, like Dizzy Gillespie and Wynton Marsalis. While it is tiny, Blues Alley boasts some of the biggest names in jazz playing here as regulars and even recording classic live albums within the establishment. It is located in an alley (hence the name, but yes, you will hear jazz and not blues) off Wisconsin Avenue NW. You won’t be disappointed during a night out at the Blues Alley.

While you’re there, The Hotel Palomar is a great option for staying in the District for your jazz night out.
